What is GSM? Top
GSM (originally "Groupe de travail Spéciale
pour les services Mobiles".) Global Systems
for Mobile Communications. Originally used
mainly in Europe, has now spread worldwide
to become the most widely used mobile technology
in today's world. GSM is now used by over
70% of worldwide mobile subscribers and
still growing.
Will my
phone work on Guam? Top
This is a tricky question. HafaTEL
uses GSM in the 1900 MHz PCS spectrum.
All GSM phones that work in the US should
work on Guam unless the phone has been carrier
locked by the original network. Also
if your phone is a GSM Tri-Band (900/1800/1900)
or Quad-Band phone it should work with HafaTEL.
GSM Dual band phones will not work on Guam.
What is SMS? Top
Short Message Service A text message service
that enables short messages of generally
no more than 140-160 characters in length
to be sent and transmitted from a cell phone.
SMS was introduced in the GSM system and
later supported by all other digital-based
mobile communications systems. Unlike paging,
but similar to e-mail, short messages are
stored and forwarded at SMS centers, which
means you can retrieve your messages later
if you are not immediately available to
receive them. SMS messages travel to the
cell phone over the system's control channel,
which is separate and apart from the voice
channel. Some phones may also support
what is know as concatenated SMS which allows
for larger messages to be sent. Please
check with your phone manual if this is
supported.
What is MMS? Top
Multimedia Messaging Service New type of
messaging within mobile networks that extends
SMS but and actually very much like email.
MMS messages can be seen as "slide shows"
where each slide consists of text, a picture
and an audio object. To support MMS networks
will need to integrate new infrastructure
elements. End users will need to have mobile
phones that support MMS (I.e. have an MMS
User Agent) MMS is defined by 3GPP and the
WAP Forum.
What is Roaming? Top
Using a wireless phone outside of your service
provider's local coverage area or home calling
area is referred to as roaming. Roaming
arrangements between service providers expand
the potential area for phone use. Service
providers typically charge a higher per-minute
fee for calls placed outside their home
calling or coverage area. Roaming within
your home network, this means that your
mobile phone automatically sets up communication
procedures with different radio base stations
when on the move. International roaming
means that you can use networks other than
your own
when traveling abroad.

What is USSD? Top
Unstructured Supplementary Services Data USSD
is a means of transmitting information or
instructions over a GSM network. USSD has
some similarities with SMS since both use
the GSM network's signaling path. Unlike SMS,
USSD is not a store and forward service and
is session-oriented such that when a user
accesses a USSD service, a session is established
and the radio connection stays open until
the user, application, or time out releases
it. This has more in common with Data than
SMS. USSD text messages can be up to 182 characters
in length.
